Beau The Musical

Last week, I ended up at Beau the Musical off-broadway. I feel there is a lot to be said about the current world of Broadway, and in this sort of drought I have been feeling of new and exciting Broadway, it seems that off-broadway is thriving.  This show is what I always imagined off-broadway to be. The plot synopsis is available elsewhere, so I'll try and just stick to what I felt and experience, not just tell you what happened. The show is playing at The Distillery at St. Lukes, which is basically the basement of a church. This coolest part of the entire experience was how they rebuilt the entire space to look like a Nashville bar. The entire room was covered in stickers, posters and string lights. There were several small tables on the floor surrounding the stage, and three rows of regular theater seating around the walls. We sat in the back row of the regular seating on the right side of the stage. I had a really good view, but my mom was sitting in a place where she could not ...

How I deal with change

I don't quit things, at least not often. This means that some of the activities I do now, I have been doing for 8, 10, 12 years. As I get older, the impact of these long term commitments start to appear. And they have been showing themselves to me glaringly over the past few weeks.        The most obvious of these is on my swim team. Over the past 12 years that I have been around and on the team, the club has changed drastically. For me, it started as the team in the lowest division, barely able to win a meet, with very little swimmers, and a club that could barely keep the electricity going through August. Since then, we gained an entirely new group of dedicated members, grew the team, and money issues seized to exist due to the growth of the camp. From here, many of the people that I grew up around graduated, leaving very few that I recognize left. Also, leaving for an entire summer to go to Europe didn't help either.       T...

The Struggles of a Club President

Hi everyone, If you have read my blog before, it is probably not a shock that I run a Broadway Club at my school.  Today, we had our first meeting of the year, and it did not go according to plan. We would be discussing Suffs, since my school will be doing Suffs in the spring. I did everything in my power as a club president. I made social media posts, I mentioned it in all my classes, but in the end, only one other student came. This student is one dedicated member of Broadway club, and I had little doubt he would come. So the meeting ended up just being the three of us, including the teacher.  Of course it hurt. But I wasn't offended that no one came to my meeting. I know that we are not the most popular club. I have never had more than 8 people come to a meeting. It does make me worried. I know that our school producing Suffs is an incredible honor. I know that the show is also incredible. I worry that no amount of passion from me and the directors will be able to spr...

Reflecting on the Audition

Hi everyone,  A few weeks ago, I went to an audition for my school production of Elf. In my mind, I am the calmest, most collected person in an audition. In reality this isn't true. No matter how many deep breaths I take, or prepared I feel, my nerves will always come. So, in an effort to learn from my past mistakes and attempts, I a going to talk about all that I've learned and all I have to work on.  The number one thing I try to remember (and this applies to academic tests typically as well) is that no one is trying to trick you. No one is lying to you. No one wants you to fail. Reminding myself that typically calms me down.  At this past audition, I went into the room, got super nervous, messed up the lyrics, the timing, everything. It really didn't go great. When I walked. out, I found a girl I barely knew panicking. She had never auditioned before and she had prepared the wrong song. I really only had met her once or twice in chemistry, so I can't say we are c...

End of an Era: Brody Grant's Last Show

Hello everyone!      This past weekend, I had the honor of attending Brody Grant's last show. It felt like a culmination of the past year and a half. From the first time I saw the Outsiders last year to now, and every performance I attended in-between, this show has felt special to me. This specific performance was one that will forever stick out in my mind.      The performance started with a standing ovation as he walked into the theater, lasting for what felt like about a minute, then just as it started to settle down, it started back up again. There was much more applause to some throughout the performance. The ensemble songs felt bigger and louder in a way. The quiet moments felt softer and more intimate. Both Far Away From Tulsa and Death's at My Door were both numbers that stick out in my mind as the latter. The gravity of the moment could be felt throughout the theater.      During the show, it felt like there were multiple shows at t...

Believe in Christmas

Image
Hi! Today, I will be talking about the Hallmark movie Believe in Christmas. The story follows Beatrice and Emilia as they take a winter vacation to "Christmas land". Emilia is a huge Christmas fan, while Bea is just along for the ride, to support her best friend.  Christmas land is a town that has committed itself to being the perfect Christmas getaway to resemble a hallmark style movie. There are some other interesting characters, such as Ethan and Porter. Ethan is son of the inn owner. Porter is another guest. Ethan is tasked with guiding Bea around the town, with tons of hallmark cliches throughout is all. Emilia is very into all the Christmas activities, and meets Porter through an eggnog tasting. Here is the movie cover! (That's Bea and Ethan) The story mainly followed Bea. I was personally more interesting in the plot following Emilia more, and wished that the movie followed her more. I liked all the characters in the movie, and I love Emilia's personality and e...

The Christmas Charade

Image
Hi everyone! I wanted to get back into writing, so thought I would switch up my topics a bit. Something fun about myself is I love Hallmark movies! I decided to put my Hallmark+ subscription to good use, and watch all 30 something 2024 Countdown to Christmas movies. I also couldn't find any rankings of these movies that didn't rate them based on how much "woke nonsense" they had in them, which is an utterly terrible and hateful way to rank love stories.  Here is a clip from the movie! Our first review of is the movie Christmas Charade! I watched this one last night, and my rating is a 9.5, which is the second highest I have given so far. I have watched 16 over the last 7 months. I will include all of them in my official ranking when I am done, but probably won't do full reviews of them all.  Christmas Charade follows Whitney, an elementary school librarian, who is looking for a little adventure in her life. Her friend sets Whitney up on a date with Mark, a cousin ...
