The Struggles of a Club President
Hi everyone,
If you have read my blog before, it is probably not a shock that I run a Broadway Club at my school.
Today, we had our first meeting of the year, and it did not go according to plan. We would be discussing Suffs, since my school will be doing Suffs in the spring. I did everything in my power as a club president. I made social media posts, I mentioned it in all my classes, but in the end, only one other student came. This student is one dedicated member of Broadway club, and I had little doubt he would come. So the meeting ended up just being the three of us, including the teacher.
Of course it hurt. But I wasn't offended that no one came to my meeting. I know that we are not the most popular club. I have never had more than 8 people come to a meeting. It does make me worried. I know that our school producing Suffs is an incredible honor. I know that the show is also incredible. I worry that no amount of passion from me and the directors will be able to spread that passion to the future cast and crew of Suffs. I know that our production this spring is going to be incredible. I can also guess that it will be a long, and somewhat difficult, road to get there. But I can assure you that the pure enthusiasm of our directors will take us through.
So my takeaway is that starting something new isn't easy. We will not have the same turnout as larger more established clubs, but we will keep meeting anyway because my mission will always stand, to create a welcoming space to share and discuss all things theater.
With love,
Makayla
Just remember the reason for the club is sharing your passion for all theater. And spreading the word about what an amazing show Suffs is will be a slow process but it will happen!
